 The real divide is rural/urban. Whether a state is red or blue usually depends on whether it's mostly urban or rural. Obviously that's an over simplification, but it's way more accurate that the idea of red states and blue states. The Rust Belt Cities (Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester, and Albany) are Blue still as well as the NYC suburbs.
